
To mark the 126th Anniversary of Philippine Independence, the Local Government Unit of Oton organized a simple wreath-laying ceremony at the National Heroes and Veterans monuments in Oton Plaza.
During his speech, Mayor Sofronio L. Fusin, Jr. paid homage to the sacrifices and struggles of all freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to the country’s independence.
Additionally, Vice Mayor Jose Neil P. Olivares delivered a presentation on the Rationale for the Commemoration of Independence Day, detailing the sequence of events leading to the Philippines’ attainment of independence. Also in attendance are the Sangguniang Bayan Members, LGU Employees and Department Heads, Civil Society Groups (CSOs), and members of the Sons and Daughters of Veterans.
Oton, one of the oldest towns in Iloilo, has a rich historical background that adds depth to the Independence Day celebrations. Established in 1570, Oton has witnessed significant events that have shaped the region’s and the nation’s history. The town’s role during the Spanish colonization, American occupation, and Japanese invasion during World War II is remembered and honored during the Independence Day festivities.
